The "Birdman" of Hollywood
This Man has a burning passion for his work in this unique niche he found with bird lovers.
Los Angeles, CA January 31, 2004 -- Richard Pirtle, a native of Lubbock, has lived in Los Angeles for over 14 years where he turned his hobby since childhood of hummingbirds into a career. Pirtle studied biology and chemistry at Texas Tech University and in 1987 received a coveted invitation from one of the university's biology professors, Dr. Vernon Proctor, to accompany him on a journey to Mexico and Central America.
The objective was to study how a certain type of primitive plant distribution was linked with bird migration in parts of Guatemala, Belize, and Chiapas, a southern state in Mexico. Pirtle used knowledge gained on this research trip along with countless hours spent in libraries to come up with the secret formula he uses in his Hummingbird Favorite.
This special nectar formula uses plant extracts from plants found along hummingbird migration routes and provides a nectar which "reminds the hummingbird of home." Pirtle found suppliers and distributors for the herbal ingredients, opened a shop on the internet and "Hummingbird Favorite" was born. He first introduced his extracts to the public at a neighborhood garage sale where many of the other items went unsold, but says Pirtle, every bottle of the nectar sold before we'd barely opened!
" Before the extract, I noticed at my house hummingbirds were atrracted to other neighbor's yards but few were coming to my feeder. I was determined to be the most popular feeder in the neighborhood!", he said. Forget the neighborhood, his mailman is busy dropping off huge bundles of orders from all over the Wetern Hemisphere! " One of my biggest customers is down in Quito, Ecuador, but since I don't ship internationally, I send it to her family in Miami, says Pirtle.
" I can't believe my luck - How often can someone make a living doing something they really love and at the same time spread so much love, joy and beauty to the rest of the world?" How often indeed.
